40 Before 40 – Update the Second

The first couple months of my fortieth year have been a little on the rough side. I was sick in March, and then I herniated a disc earlier this month, which has really cut into the activities I was planning – the hot hatha, pole dancing, and barre classes.

Because life is constantly in flux, I may do some switching around. I’ve been cleared for pilates but not yoga; walking but not running; and swimming but not pole dancing. (To be fair, I didn’t ask about pole dancing. It just seems like maybe that’s not something this gazelle wants to try while rehabbing a back.)

So I’ll try a pilates class instead of the hot hatha class I was going to do. I’ll walk a 5K in May instead of run one. It’s all about compromise.

I’m sure by now you’re wondering if I got anything done in the last month.

I most certainly did!

I ate a cheese. That’s right – I go for the hard stuff. (heh.)

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

I’m 2/2 in cheeses/month!

I also finished my first award winning book (and then reviewed it!): Evernight.

19124363

I’m very nearly finished with my second, so I should be back on track with that by the end of the week.

One of the more exciting things I got to check off the list in April was meeting friend in the computer Elizabeth Hunter. You may remember Elizabeth from my frequent reviews of her books. We got to meet and hang out a lot while we were both in Vegas for the 2016 RT Booklovers convention. She is just as wonderful IRL as she is via the internets.

The next month will have more books and more cheese and more pie! I also need to make my hard cheese so it can sit in the cheese cave and age gracefully. I’m signed up for my Habitat for Humanity build, but am contemplating pushing that back (ha!) because of my disc problem. I’m going to get my hairs done all purty-like to check that off the list. And it’s possible that going to a concerty show thingie counts for an item on the lists since I almost never go to those types of things. Possibly.

The #40before40 project

Update the first – March 2016

BONUS CONTENT!

How am I doing with my 2016 goals, you (almost certainly did not) ask:

Well, the big ones:

  1. More sleep – after the four days of no sleep at all in March (you guys! I started hallucinating!), things seem great in comparison. Still not as good as I’d like, but better than they have been.
  2. More writing – Yeah….I need to get my ass in gear here. I have things to do and people to impress.
  3. More movement – stupid sick and messed up back!
  4. More job satisfaction – no comment. 🙂

Mini-goals:

  1. More water – YES! I am a hydrated water monster! (Or something)
  2. More gin – I’ve been doing well here, too. I love the taste of success.
  3. More love – I think this is doing quite well.
  4. More laughter – There have been some decent laughs. I have the best friends, y’all!
  5. More time outdoors with the Bean – We’re two blocks from a park now! And we planted a garden! And my back yard is fenced in (although not kid proof – he loves to leave the back yard and come through the house to freak me out)
  6. More unicorns – I am wearing these RIGHT NOW!  13043390_10154218257939410_1189946415125501668_n
  7. More letting shit go – Still a work in progress
  8. More reading – Not more, per se, but I still read a fair amount.
  9. More cheese – YES! my #40before40 is helping immensely with this
  10. More beer & cribbage nights – I need to work harder on this. I think there’s only been one cribbage night this year so far…slackers!

Happy Blogiversary to Gazelles on Crack!

Just over ten years ago (ten years and a couple weeks), I published my very first post on this blog.

Gazelles on Crack is turning 10!

Gazelles on Crack is turning 10!

I’d been blogging for a while – first on Xanga (gosh, it’s really too bad that I am unable to locate those posts…too bad indeed) and then later on LiveJournal. That apparently does still exist. I even appear to still have ten friends left on LJ.

I don’t remember why I decided to switch over to my own blogging platform. Probably because so many cool people blogged and I thought I’d give it a shot. I’m certainly not as prolific now as I was ten years ago. I don’t even get the readership that I got ten years ago. But we’re still at it, even now.

In the past ten years, I’ve written 1,676 posts and received 7,123 comments.

I’ve written 480 posts about running and 173 about gin and cheese. That’s even more than the 166 posts I’ve written about my kid. (Gotta have priorities!)

Running and Bubbles!

Running and Bubbles!

I’ve written 100 posts about books, including book reviews and 158 about shoes.

My posts are fairly evenly balanced (according to my tag cloud) among

  • Alvie Bean
  • Book Reviews
  • Exercise
  • Goals
  • Running
  • Shoes
It was my friend Margaret's Prada pumps that really got me hooked on beautiful shoes. Damn you, Margaret!

You’ve been here for my move from Los Angeles to Portland, for my wedding, for my adventures in domestic bad-assery and gardening, for the death of my father and the birth of my son, and for my next big adventure of moving out on my own sans architect.

Maybe you’re one of the readers who got here via a random internet search? Although the most popular search term on the day I’m writing this is “toe prosthetic”(?), the top ten overall search terms (that are not my actual blog name) are:

  1. Anthropophobia (still relevant – I’ll catch you up on Day 2 of Vegas: The Hiding soon)
  2. Spiders (legit)
  3. No Sleeping (It’s like you know me, google search engine!)
  4. Early Pr0n (Early in the morning? Pre-modern? Are we hoping for medieval pr0n? I NEED MORE INFORMATION!)
  5. Christina Ricci
  6. Dirty Hippie
  7. Beach Wedding Shoes
  8. Unicorn Bicycle
  9. I Suck
  10. The toaster is very loyal (This is my favorite)

Most of the rest of the top are variations on pr0ns and shoes (or combinations thereof. Like Salvadorian Shoe Pr0n.)

Must insert own pr0n

Must insert own pr0n

This may be less relevant, but the top three search terms for the last quarter are:

  1. Unicorn cut a bitch
  2. Accidental cleavage
  3. Cat maid outift
I actually thought this image search was going to be mainly cats. HAHAHAHA! No.

I approve of Google sending all of you my way. Welcome. Pull up a chair and pour yourself a gin.

The top five posts ever are pretty much what you’d expect after seeing the popular search terms.

  1. Arach Attack!
  2. Anthropophobia
  3. Faux-lebrity Encounter
  4. (Spring Trends in) PR0N!!!; and oddly
  5. Product Review – Moji Knee Ice Pack

Disappointingly, none of my book reviews are more compelling than fear, fake Jennifer Grey, shoes, or (???) ice packs, although my 2015 wrap-up is pretty far up the list…

The best, really, are the friends I’ve made via blogging. There is no way to name them all, of course, but a few that I’ll mention are Eliza, Claire, Meri, Steph, Kristine, Jessica, Erika, Amy, the PBRs, and certainly not least, my PSM Cat. Through Cat I’ve met a lot of other people, and the network keeps expanding and expanding.

This is my bff, Thor the Thunder thug. And also my psm, Cat. She is not, as far as I know, the thunder anything.

So thanks, readers.  Thanks for ten years of reading, commenting, sending me pictures of shoes, helping me discover new books and authors and websites that will help me waste time, and most of all for sharing my life.

Thanks for a great 10 years!

Not enough coffee in the world

Last night I slept worse than I’ve slept in ages. Which is good in that I’ve mostly been sleeping better lately but bad in that apparently my body is no longer adept at functioning on <4 hours of sleep.

not-enough-coffee-tumblr-image

A combination of a Saturday night allergic reaction plus a rather haphazard approach to food and drugs on Sunday was mostly to blame, I think. It is almost 10 am and I feel like I’ve been awake for four days instead of four hours.

HOWEVER – that is not what I’m here to tell you. If I blogged every time I was having insomnia, I’d probably be a lot more prolific in this space.

I am here to remind you that this week is my BIRTHDAY! And you know what that means, right?

french 75

That’s right, it’s national gin week. (Ha! Who am I kidding? Every week is national gin week.)

It also means that it’s very nearly time to reveal my 40 before 40 list that I’ve been working on for the past couple of months. I have some big plans for the last year in my 30s. (Although a friend told me on Saturday that, “[he didn’t] think anyone would guess [I was] over 35…[I] still look barely 30.”

Obviously that friend is now my new favorite person in all the land and probably deserves some kind of gin-based payment.

I’m hoping/planning on starting to post more in just over a week. More book reviews, writing updates, random goal-oriented posts, and possibly even some long-overdue shoe porn.

The world needs more of this.

The world needs more of this.

In the meantime, you can expect an exciting (for me) post on Wednesday and then regular contact will resume in a couple weeks or less. I’ve gotta start preparing everyone for the big event in April…

Gazelles on Crack is turning 10!

Gazelles on Crack is turning 10!

This Time, It’s All About Me

It’s that time of year again. Many of us reflect on the year that is nearly past and start looking forward to the next year.

It’s a time of endings and new beginnings. I try not to do resolutions because I think they’ve developed a negative connotation over the years as being doomed to fail.

Instead I set goals. Sounds so much fancier and more doable. I know it’s a bit early to officially talk about what I want out of 2016, but you know what? I don’t care.

Because 2016 is the year of the Amy.

2015-10-20 13.22.41

I’ve spent a lot of time in the past years not making me a priority and that has got to stop. To be the best me, which in turn makes me the best mom I can be and the best partner I can be, I need to take care of me.

That means that my needs don’t get put at the bottom of the list. Compromising is good, but not when it leads to loss of sense of self.

There are four big things that I am planning to be the best me possible. These, above all other things, are what I am prioritizing this year. I believe that by making these four things a priority, I’ll have more time and energy for all the people in my life that need my time and energy.

  1. More sleep – I need to manage my cortisol levels better without drugs (who wants to talk about drug detoxing? Anyone? Because let me tell you, the controlled withdrawal from one of my ‘keep Amy sane’ drugs made me scratch my 2016 goal to become a drug addict). Stress management is better for overall health and sleep is a key ingredient for that. So I need to get back in the habit of early to bed.
  2. More writing – I have a book to finish up, and I’d like to finish it by my birthday (2/24 in case you’re taking notes). I have more books to edit. I have an edited book to send out to a couple beta readers. I need to make a concerted effort to get it published. I’d also like to do some smaller pieces and blog more. I love sitting at the keyboard and doing what I love should also help with that pesky stress.
  3. More movement – this was a pretty crap year of exercise for me. I started off strong, then got pneumonia, then got burned out. So no real big race goals this year. Just make time to move consistently every week. Trail running, bicycling, swimming, yoga. I like those things. I can do those things. I need to make the time to do those things on the regular. The architect can totally handle mornings without my presence a couple times a week. Bonus: exercise is a great way to increase stress management! (It’s almost like there’s a theme!)
  4. More job satisfaction – I think this would go the furthest towards managing the stress levels. I am not sure exactly how to get there, but by the end of 2016 I want to look around and say absolutely that I do not dread going to work (and maybe, if I get really crazy, that I actually enjoy what I’m doing). For some reason this one is the scariest.

There might be difficult paths on the road to putting my own oxygen mask on first, but when else do I start prioritizing myself? I don’t want to look back in twenty years and realize that nothing’s changed. It’s the last full calendar year in my 30s. When better, really?

This is what awesome looks like.

Book Review: Magic Shifts

I have been reading this series for a very long time. A very long time. If it ever ends, I will be devastated. Not so devastated that I will hunt down the authors and lock them in my writers’ dungeon retreat (besides, that’s already occupied by a certain Ms. Hunter), but I will be miffed; irked; annoyed; nettled; vexed; et cetera.

I reviewed the fifth in the series in 2011. (That was so many years ago!) We are now on full-length novel #8.

LINK!

LINK!

I half-listened; half read this book. I can do nothing else but get to the finish line as fast as possible when it comes to Kate and Curran.

It. Was. Brilliant. I keep expecting them to dive off the deep end and get cheesy weird. (Ahem. Riley & Quinn; Cat & Bones; et cetera.) So far, we’ve been lucky. I love the tension (sexual and otherwise) between Kate and Curran. I love the weird relationship between Kate and her dad. I love how the supporting characters (George!) don’t let their ‘rents pull asshole shit. I love how Kate is raising Julie. But mostly, I love how Kate and Curran are both strong and don’t take shit from each other.

IMG_2785 copy

Things I didn’t like: Lack o’ Derek and Andrea (I know Andrea’s gestating, but she’s a motherfucking werehyena – don’t tell me she couldn’t kick ass). I need more Jim and Dali. I adore Saiman and need a hell of a lot more of him. I think he’s lonely.

A girl can dream – and Saiman and Loki are related

The story was a good one. It built on the existing mythology of Kate and her tower-obsessed daddy, mentioned her arch-nemesis Hugh (I need an arch-nemesis), and it also had newish characters come to the forefront (George and Eduardo) and explored a complementary but new mythology.

I don’t want to spoil things. My PSM hasn’t finished it yet, and I’m doing my best not to harass her too much. (LIES! I’ve basically told her that sleep is not an option until she’s at least finished chapter 14.)

As soon as I got to the part where the big bad was identified, I knew what I needed to drink with this.

It’s not whiskey.

Introducing the Djinn and Djuice

I went with gin for the obvious verbal pun (also because a couple of weeks ago, Cat tweeted “more gin less djinn” and that’s my new life motto) and the juice is pomegranate because of its origination in the Middle East. If you can find it, go with Persian Lime juice.

Ingredients

  • 1 part Persian lime juice (or any old lime juice if your grocery store isn’t fancy)
  • 3 parts gin (I used Tanquerey, which is an excellent mixing gin)
  • 6 parts 100% pomegranate juice
  • pomegranate seeds

Instructions

Combine gin, pom juice & lime juice in a shaker full of ice. Rub three times (or shake, if you’re that kind of girl).

Strain into martini glass. Add pom seeds. (I can’t rim my drinks. I leave all the rimming for Cat. She’s the true expert.)

Drink. Enjoy. Thank me later. (So good.)
