Long Bio

Amy Cissell is the USA Today bestselling author of the Eleanor Morgan, Eden Valley, and Oracle Bay series. She has been self-publishing her work since 2017 and writes fantasy, often of the paranormal variety. Eleanor Morgan is urban/contemporary fantasy, Oracle Bay is paranormal romance/cozy mystery, and Eden Valley is paranormal women’s fiction/romance. Her upcoming series, Vamps in the Vineyard, is paranormal women’s fiction/contemporary fantasy.

Amy was born on February 24 in Kansas City Missouri and has one younger sister. Her father was a United Methodist minister, avid reader, and published author. Amy’s mother was a nurse, and later a college instructor of nursing. Amy grew up in South Dakota, never living in a town with a population over 1,500 until she graduated high school.

She received her Bachelor’s of Arts in English from South Dakota State University, then moved to Los Angeles to experience the big city, warm weather, and ocean breezes (not to mention the amazing food). After being laid off during the dotcom bust, she began working in non-profit development, quickly becoming a subject matter expert in donor databases.

Amy wrote her first novel in 2005 during NaNoWriMo, and crosses her fingers that it will never see the light of day. In 2006, Amy moved to Portland, Oregon with her fiancé (now ex-husband), and after a brief stint working for the Oregon Zoo Foundation, moved into the field of government grants administration and financial analysis at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU).

While working at OHSU, Amy went back to school at the University of Oregon and received her Master’s of Science in Applied Information Management, for which she won the Capstone Award for her research project “Examining the Role of Information and Communication Technologies to Improve Food Security Management: The Case in Oregon.”

Shortly after handing in her capstone project in early 2012, Amy’s father, Jim Cissell, passed away from glioblastoma multiforme at the age of 62. Three weeks later, Amy’s daughter was born. During her maternity leave, Amy started her second novel, and later wrote an essay on postpartum depression that was published in Brain Child magazine.

The novel Amy started in 2012 eventually morphed into The Cardinal Gate, Amy’s first published novel. She decided to self-publish after attending the (now defunct) Romantic Times conference in 2016. Amy met several independently published authors at the conference and was impressed with the freedom they had to make their own business and creative decisions. She set up her business under the imprint name Broken World Publishing (named after her fourth novel!).

Amy married her second husband, fellow author C. Thomas Lafollette, in 2019. They share a love of travel, and Amy has visited Mexico, Vancouver Canada, Iceland, Belgium, Ireland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and France in the last few years before Covid ruined her travel plans.

Amy’s interests, when not writing or editing for her freelance clients at Cissell Ink, include reading, spending time with her daughter, hiking, taking all the wine classes she can find (for research!), and getting angry at people who can create visual arts in a way she has never been able to. She is a sporadic gardener, runner-in-(re)training, aspirational haunted doll collector, and wine appreciator.
