Double Standards Are Fun
I think that Sen. Daniel Craig (R-Idaho) is probably not a very good man. I think that the lack of goodness stems less from his soliciting sex in bathrooms and more from his hypocrisy – the Senator votes with the homophobes 100% of the time.
However, I am a little disappointed that he’s getting his ethics reviewed. When Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana) admitted to frequenting a brothel, he apologized and all was well….so, hetero relations with hookers is really okay as long as you apologize and mean it, but closeted gay bathroom sex is a problem? I mean other than the closeted part, which is regrettable (but probably understandable, although I understand there’s quite the gay scene in Coeur d’Alene), and the public restroom part, which is icky regardless of who is involved….I think the sticking point for the open tent of the GOP might be the “gay” part.
Lying about sex is something you do if you’re a politician. I think it’s part of the secret politician vows you take (the Hippocritic oath as compared to the medical profession’s Hippocratic oath)…but lying AND being a hypocrite is just sad.
So – in conclusion, Sen. Craig is icky, but not because he’s gay. Sen. Vitter is also icky. In fact, let’s just go ahead and assume that most Senators are icky, and if they’re not having illicit or illegal sex, they’re doing something else wrong. HOWEVER, unless that something wrong is taking bribes for votes, or lying to the American public in a way that gets wars started or people killed, or selling crack to kindergartners, I don’t care (sell all the crack you want to 7th graders, though – those kids scare me). Go out and make some nice laws, uphold that laws that exist, and keep the Executive & Secret non-executive Cheney branch of the government in check. And no more Alberto Gonzalez-like AGs, okay?
Also, a lot of people (gay or otherwise) who want anonymous sex don’t have to use a public restroom. There’s this cool thing called the internet, and as long as your screen name isn’t “imnotagaysenatorfromidaho” you can probably be pretty sneaky. Just don’t hand out your business cards.
And, a personal shout-out to Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota). I don’t think you’re icky or having illegal sex, and I’m glad you’re feeling better now.
