Book Review: By Schism Rent Asunder (Safehold #2)
By Schism Rent Asunder by David Weber
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
After my shaky start with the series (the first pages of Safehold #1 – “Off Armageddon Reef” did not draw me in), I’m finding myself enjoying this series quite a bit.
The story is progressing nicely – if a bit predictably at times. The beautiful young queen who feels rebellious towards mother church & the handsome young king who is deeply embroiled in the same rebellion are going to get married? Who would’ve guessed?
However, there are a few twists that I was not anticipating, and that’s what keeps me reading. I think the author gets a little overly technical about all the weaponry that’s being manufactured – I mean I love a cannon mount as much as the next person, but I don’t need a lot of details about them in a novel. The battle scenes are pretty good, though – just enough detail without crossing the line into gratuitous gore.
The main character, Merlin Anthrawes, remains just human enough to keep me interested in him, and the characters are a good balance of humor, vulnerability and unwavering purpose.
I’ve already placed the 3rd & 4th books on hold at the library, proving that once again, no matter how much I do or don’t admire an author, I’m a sucker for a series.
